Cabinet: James Schlesinger

On this date in 2014, Dr. James R. Schlesinger died at the age of 85. Born February 15, 1929, in New York City, he earned his bachelors, masters, and doctorate in economics at Harvard. He was a professor of economics at the University of Virginia and then a fellow at the Rand Corporation before moving into government service.

President Nixon appointed him chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission (1971-73), and then made him the 9th Director of Central Intelligence (January-July 1973). In July 1973, Schlesinger was named the 12th Secretary of Defense, serving into President Ford's administration (he left the post in 1975). In 1977, President Carter named Schlesinger the first Secretary of Energy, making him one of only 12 people thus far to serve as Cabinet secretaries under three Presidents. Schlesinger left the Cabinet in 1979, but later served on a number of advisory boards and commissions.

Cabinet: Cyrus Vance

On this date in 1917, Cyrus Roberts Vance was born in Clarksburg, West Virginia. After earning his bachelors from Yale, and then a law degree from Yale in 1942, he joined the Navy, and served aboard the destroyer USS Hale during World War II. Following the war, he practiced as a lawyer in New York City.

In 1962, Vance was named the 7th Secretary of the Army. In 1964, he became Deputy Secretary of Defense, leaving the administration in 1967 to become a professor. In 1977, Jimmy Carter appointed Vance the 57th Secretary of State. He resigned in 1980, opposing President Carter's secret military plans to rescue the American hostages in Iran.

After leaving the administration, he returned to the practice of law, but was frequently recalled to government service as a special envoy and more. He died in January 2002.
