Vice President Aaron Burr's arrest

On this date in 1807, former Vice President Aaron Burr was arrested in Wakefield, Mississippi Territory (now the state of Alabama) on charges of treason. President Thomas Jefferson had issued the warrant more than a month previously, based on the testimony of a former associate of Burr’s, and Burr had twice turned himself in and then been released before this arrest. Burr was accused of trying to help Mexico overthrow Spanish power in the Southwest. At trial, that August, in Virginia, Burr was acquitted.
