On this date in 1829, former Second Lady Hannah Minthorne Tompkins died at the age of 47. Born in 1781 in New York, she married 23-year-old lawyer Daniel Tompkins in 1798, when she was just 16. Between 1800 and 1814, they had eight children. Due to illness, Hannah did not attend the inauguration of 1817, when her husband became Vice President. He died a few months after leaving office in 1825, the youngest Vice President to die, and the first to serve eight full years as Vice President. Hannah survived him by fewer than four years, and is buried with him in lower Manhattan.
