Cabinet: George Washington Campbell

On this date in 1848, eight days after his 79th birthday, George Washington Campbell died. He had been the 5th Secretary of the Treasury, from February 9 to October 5, 1814. His rapid resignation came after his disillusionment with the position, and his lack of success in raising additional funds for the government during the War of 1812.

His other government service included stints in the House of Representatives and the Senate, a judgeship, and three years as Ambassador to Russia.

Campbell was born in Scotland. His family immigrated to North Carolina in 1772. He was the fourth of 24 Cabinet Secretaries born in foreign countries.
