Cabinet: Elliot L. Richardson

On this date in 1976, following Gerald Ford's appointment, Elliot L. Richardson took over as the 23rd Secretary of Commerce, making him the only person in history to head four different Cabinet Departments. Previously, Richard Nixon had appointed him the 9th Secretary of Health Education and Welfare, the 11th Secretary of Defense, and then the 69th Attorney General. Richardson (1920-99) also served as the US Ambassador to the UK in 1975.

Cabinet: Earl L. Butz

On this date in 2008, Earl L. Butz died at the age of 98 years 214 days. Born in Indiana on July 3, 1909, he is the longest-lived Cabinet Secretary. He was the 18th Secretary of Agriculture (December 1971-October 1976), serving under Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford.
