Supreme Court: Sandra Day O'Connor

On this date in 2006, Sandra Day O'Connor retired from her seat as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court (she had announced her impending retirement in July). President Reagan appointed her in September 1981. The 91st Associate Justice, she was the first woman to serve on the Court. Born in 1930, she received her BA and LLB from Stanford University. She worked as a lawyer, politician, and judge in Arizona before her appointment.

During her tenure on the Court, in 1993, President Clinton appointed Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the second female Associate Justice.
